May 21, 2008
VICTORIA, BC, May 21, 2008…The 2008 Dragon boat season kicks off this Saturday, May 24 on the Gorge Waterway!  38 teams from all over Vancouver Island, and one team from Saltspring Island, are gathering at the Gorge Rowing and Paddling Centre for the 4th Annual Gorge Super Sprints (250m). With a 35% increase in team registration from last year, this year’s event is the largest and most exciting to date!

The races kick off at 9am, and teams will be battling over 250 metres.  The short course is very spectator friendly, and Dragon Boat festivals are always great for having fun with friends and family.

The Gorge Super Sprints were created in 2005 to give dragon boat teams a high caliber race opportunity at the beginning of the season, which will help prepare them for the summer and fall racing season.  Internationally recognized teams like the Gorging Dragons, Dragonauts, and Xtreme Reach, will duke it out with some up and coming crews for the coveted Golden Paddle, the award for the top team of each category (Open Mixed and Women’s).

Dragon Boating has been an exciting summer activity in Victoria for over a decade. A typical Dragon Boat race is contested over 500 metres.  At 250 metres, the Gorge Super Sprints offer teams little room for error, and promise extremely close races.  There will be food vendors and lots of fun to be had.

GO is a non-profit Amateur Athletic Association, and Registered Charity, dedicated to sharing the benefits of rowing and paddling sports with Canadians of all ages & athletic abilities. The GRPC (a GO Centre), offers community based rowing and paddling programs for all ages and abilities.

The event is produced by the GO Rowing and Paddling Association of Canada (GO) and the Gorge Rowing and Paddling Centre (A GO Centre).
