Dragon Boat teams gathered in Nanaimo August 29th for the first annual Valhalla Pure Outfitters Nanaimo Women’s Cup Dragon Boat Regatta. There was a strong wind in Nanaimo’s Harbour but it wasn’t enough to stop our thirteen participating teams from completing three rounds of 500 meter races.

Nanaimo team Tsunami won the event with the fastest combined times of the day, 7:29:01. Teams traveled from all over the island to take part in the one day event including the Spirit Point Dragons from Salt Spring Island, the Ladies of the Lake from Port Alberni, and the Flying Dragons from Courtenay.

The event was proudly sponsored by Valhalla Pure Outfitters (Nanaimo Store) and supported by the first women’s team in Nanaimo, the Nusa’Lon Dragons who have paddled together since 2002.  The Nusa’Lon Dragons worked hard for months to help the Nanaimo Paddling Centre organize the event.  The team also wanted to make sure the day was extra special for the paddlers by providing teams with goodie bags, running 50/50 draws, and creating a fun relay at the end of the day “Dressed for Success.”  It was a treat to finish the day watching teams dress up in wet clothes, race into a boat, and race out of a boat and sit on the docks with their hands up hoping for a fast time and a medal.

The Nusa’Lon Dragons also put together a large gift basket for a raffle.  The funds raised from the 50/50 draws and raffle were generously donated to the Nanaimo Paddling Centre toward purchasing new equipment.  Thank you to the Nusa’Lon Dragons for raising nearly $500 and thank you to the paddlers who purchased tickets.

It was a wonderful day under the sun and we look forward to teams returning and new teams joining us next year.

A big thank you again to Valhalla Pure Outfitters (Nanaimo Store) for title sponsoring this event in its first year!
